History of footy with Russell Holmsby
Tuesday 15 September 2026 at 6:30 PM
Chelsea Library
Event Description
Get into the spirit of the AFL Finals and join football historian and author Russell Holmesby for an engaging discussion on the origins of Australian Rules Football and its connections to our local community.
A partly retired journalist, author of 11 sporting books, and historian for the St Kilda Football Club, Russell will explore how a suburban Melbourne competition grew into Australia's largest sporting code. He'll examine the parallels and contrasts between the game played in 1897 and the AFL we know today, bringing to life the people, stories and milestones that shaped the sport.
Russell will also delve into the local connection, highlighting the rich historical and contemporary ties between the St Kilda Football Club and Moorabbin, offering a unique perspective on a sporting relationship that remains significant to the Kingston community.
Reserve your place today and celebrate finals season with a fascinating look at the history of the game we love.
