Event Description

Alli Parker's novel "At the Foot of the Cherry Tree" is based on the incredible true story of her grandparents.

Gordon, an Australian soldier, meets Cherry, a survivor of the atomic bomb, in Japan in the aftermath of WWII. Against all odds they fall in love and marry but then discover that the White Australia Policy prevents Gordon bringing Cherry and their children home. Gordon has to battle his own family and the government for acceptance.

Over seven years and across two countries, this deeply moving novel tells the story of a love so powerful it changes Australia forever.
